Soaking, cooking or germinating seed creates a positive nutritional effect. Not only does the seed become more easily digestible but each one of these processes start to change seed in various positive ways. Germinating starts the enzymatic process, releasing amino acids and increasing the content of vitamins A, B and E. Starch [indigestible by birds] is converted to digestible sugars. The only drawback is that warmth and moisture is also a good growing medium for bacteria so it is important to wash the seeds thoroughly after any of these processes. Soaked, germinated or cooked seed can be fed as is or mixed with soft food or eggfood. Do not leave any out till the next day.

Steps for soaking seed: rinse the seed, then soak for 3 to 24 hours until the seeds swell; then rinse again, drain and feed that day.

Steps for germinating seed: rinse, then soak for 24 hours then rinse again; allow to germinate for 24 – 48 hours in a sieve or in germ dishes – keep moist and warm; then rinse again and feed that day.

Steps for cooking seed: rinse, then boil for 10 minutes then simmer for another 45 minutes; rinse again and allow to cool; feed straight away.

Our Seeds for Soaking mix can also be used for Canaries, Budgerigars, Parakeets and Finches.
